Occlusive
Shea Butter
Also: Butyrospermum Parkii Butter
Plant-derived occlusive rich in fatty acids and vitamins A and E. The structural backbone of overnight balms and lip masks.
What it is
Fat extracted from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa), native to West Africa. Composed primarily of stearic and oleic acids with smaller amounts of linoleic and palmitic.
How it works
Forms an occlusive layer that prevents transepidermal water loss while delivering essential fatty acids that integrate into the skin's lipid matrix. Anti-inflammatory effect attributed to its triterpene content.
Who it is for
Dry, chapped, or wind-damaged areas. Lips, hands, elbows. As a leave-on overnight occlusive.
What to watch for
Heavy occlusion can be too much for facial use in oily skin. Best used on lips, body, and as overnight masks rather than daytime moisturiser.
